Library Assistant, Part-time- including Circulation Assistants and Shelving Assistant
General Description:
The most important overall responsibility of all employees is to provide service in a pleasant, helpful, and effective manner to our community and those from surrounding areas.
Performs responsible clerical and paraprofessional circulation or other support duties under the supervision of the Circulation Manager or the Children's Librarian. Maintains security and safety of the public, staff, and the building in conjunction with the supervisor on duty. Ensures that building is secured at the closing of the library.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Charges and discharges library materials, collects fines, registers new patrons and issues library cards in adult and children's departments.
Assists the public in use of library resources and equipment, including help with the photocopier, public PCs and printing
Answers questions on library organization, holdings, policies and procedures.
Shelving and shelf reading of library materials.
Accepts reserves for library materials, handles inter-library loan requests and notifies patron when items are available.
Works with supervisor on duty to see that the library's code of conduct is followed
Empties the book drop at designated times.
Handles overdue notices in accordance with library policy.
Assists librarians with inventory of collections.
Participates in community outreach efforts to market library programs and services
Notifies director and related staff of problems with the building or equipment
Performs other duties as assigned by administration.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities to perform the job:
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public and to maintain effective working relationships with other library staff.
Ability to maintain the physical security of the public, staff, and building and to work with supervisors and other Public Safety personnel to achieve this.
Ability to maintain established library records and files.
Knowledge of books and background in literature helpful.
Ability to stimulate interest and encourage participation in reading and other library activities.
Strong organizational ability.
Qualifications
High School graduate or equivalent.
Previous library experience or some college or library courses.
Proficiency with computers and related software.
Availability on nights and weekends
General Information:
Salary range: $18.70 - $21.90 per hour
Benefits: Permanent part-time employees hired after Jan. 1, 2013, who are regularly scheduled to work 15 or more hours per week are entitled to pro-rated vacation, holiday, and bereavement leave. As established by the Paid Sick Leave Act (N.J.S.A 34:11 D-1 et. seq.), all employees (hourly, salaried, full-time, part-time) are entitled to paid sick leave, effective October 29th, 2018.
