Book: The Grace Year
Author: Kim Liggett
Genre: YA Dystopian
About the Book
In a mix between A Handmaid’s Tale and The Hunger Games, this YA book has it all. In Tierney James’ town, girls are banished to release their magic into the wild for their sixteenth year and forced to survive on their own. Women in this town are essentially not pure until they release their magic and if they don’t, they make men go crazy. In this book, women are pit against each other and it analyzes the difficult conflicts and relationships between girls who are forced to abandon everything they know to survive.
Let's talk about it
This book is a perfect show of feminism and an important message for girls growing up today. I thought this book was amazing. You had the action and suspense to keep you hooked while also being so connected to Tierney and her journey. I found myself really caring for her and her development, especially when you see her determination. This book is haunting and loopy and honestly a wild ride. I think this book is good for all ages and it carries a very important lesson along with it. While the world this is in keeps women down, they’re the central force of this book. If you’re feeling that you want to pick up a dystopian book but don’t want the usual series or trilogy, this is a great one and done.
