TEEN TECH WEEK ONLINE RESOURCE SCAVENGER HUNT

March 2-8 is Teen Tech week! How savvy are you in the world beyond Google? All of the questions below can be answered from the online resources found at www.haddonfieldlibrary.org, if you know where to go. You’ll just need your library card number and to look for the clues in the questions. Turn in your answers at the Haddonfield Public Library by the end of March for the chance to win great prizes, including Amazon gift cards! Feel free to use the back of this sheet or a separate sheet of paper, and make sure to include your name and phone number.

1. Jack Kerouac, the author of the contemporary classic On the Road, was not the only author in his family. Name two related, published Kerouacs. What was unusual about the typewriter his daughter used to write Baby Driver?

2. On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King was assassinated. While this news dominated page one of the next day's New York Times, there was also a hint of something to come in that November’s presidential election. Who did the hinting, and where?

3.  Before he was a school, J. Fithian Tatem was a man who lived in Haddonfield, and an important part of its heritage. According to the 1910 census, what was his occupation and how many children did he have? How old was the youngest?

4. People have loved the novel To Kill a Mockingbird for many reasons. If someone wanted to find a similar work from a list, one that dealt with lawyers, race relations in the southern states and the father-daughter relationship, what other work might be similar?  (Try to narrow it down to one).

5. Find a source that has facts about today's science (if it takes more than one click, you’re probably off track).  In August, 1995, a middle school class in
Minnesota came across some strangely deformed frogs. According to the most recent article, what is the most likely cause of these deformations? When did this article appear? Aren’t those pictures gross?

6. If someone were interested in working at Threds and Sleds in Haddonfield this summer, what reference source to
USA businesses has contact and employee information? How many full time employees are there? If this doesn't work out, name two similar businesses nearby. Big hint: try New Jersey’s One-Stop Library Gateway to Quality Information! (lots of great stuff here).

7. Crisis. You've got an exam on Beowulf coming up and there's not a single copy of the Cliff's Notes (
Baldwin, Stanley P.; 2000.; Hungry Minds) to be found in any bookstore. Is there a library in Camden County, New Jersey where you might find a copy in their catalog? What is the phone number?

8. Find a resource with a World Atlas, among over a dozen other interactive reference works. Locate the section where you can rank states. Where does
New Jersey rank in rate of traffic fatalities? In public teacher salaries? Food for thought: Do well paid teachers save lives?

9. Believe it or not, not everything about
Kazakhstan was covered in the Borat movie. Find a virtual reference source on countries and their cultures. What food might you receive from your host as a symbol of respect if you have traveled a long way to his party in Kazakhstan?

10. You are interested in contemporary accounts of the
World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. Find a place that hosts a Student Research Center. When did the magazine Time publish a special issue on this subject, and what is the name of the article that presents a timeline of events?
